1932 was the first year that this US silver quarter had first President George Washington on its front. On the back of this coin is an American eagle on a perch with its wings spread. John Flanagan is the artist that came up with the design that was initially made to honor the first President of the USA. 1932 was exactly two hundred years after Washington was born.
United States quarters in 1932 were made in 3 locations including Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco. The Philadelphia mint had the highest production of these coins that year with 5.4 struck. The Denver and San Francisco mints had much smaller numbers with 436,000 and 408,000 respectively. Now because of their low numbers those two are highly sought after coins.
The Washington Quarter was the first type of coin I started to collect. So here we are and this post will be about the 1932 silverQuarter one of which is in my collection and can be seen below. It was made in Philadelphia where there were a total of 5,404,000 produced that year. Ah yes the US Washington Quarter, it has been around a while, since 1932. If you are a collector it is likely you knew that already but I figured I would mention it nonetheless in case some readers did not know.
Now the idea of having President (and General) George Washington on a 1932 US circulated coin came about with the idea that the United States should celebrate 200 years since the great man was born (which was in 1732). There were a couple of designs in consideration to be used on the Washington Quarter with John Flanagan’s chosen in the end. What I find particularly interesting is that the initial plan to commemorate the 1st US President was to be on the normal or in other words circulated half dollar of 1932. Later through congress this was changed to the 25 cent piece and it was to permanently replace the Standing Liberty Quarter (which was seen as problematic as it had production issues.)
My 1932 silver Washington Quarter from the Philadelphia mint has certainly since a lot of circulation. What sticks out about it is that “IN GOD WE TRUST” is not very legible. Also there is a little bit of blending of the rims with the legends and the eagle’s left wing tip shows much wear. With that said I still find this coin to be attractive and am glad that it is part of my collection. What do you think of the grade? Do you have a 1932 silver Quarter like this in your collection?

Below you’ll see a a 1932 silver quarter from Philadelphia (no mint mark). It certainly has seen its use and would be graded good, like G4.
